Ty Mawr- welsh for Great House – Farm lies between Abergavenny and Raglan in the Usk Valley in Monmouthshire. Because of the heavy soil it is ideal to retain the moisture to grow organic vegetables, though heavy rain does see it waterlogged.
Great
House Farm became fully organic on 1st April, 2001, after completing a 2-year
conversion period. It is a family farm, run by Philip & Josie Bevan and
their four sons, Russell, Andrew, Matthew and Gareth. The whole farm is organic
– Our certification is with the Soil Association. We have an organic dairy
herd, a few sheep and pigs and we grow our own cereals to feed to the animals.
Most vegetables are grown in the field, though we do have three polytunnels,
to enable us to grow more early crops – our climate can’t always
be relied upon.
Our organic
vegetables are sold mainly direct to the public through local farmers’
markets. We enjoy talking to people and finding out the type of produce they
want to buy. It also gives us the opportunity to convey the way that our vegetables
are grown and ask for suggestions for the next planting year. We are always
willing to have a go at growing something new – we can’t guarantee
the results!
